The Dio Distance Running Squad is seeking a passionate and experienced coach to lead our dedicated team of runners in 2025. This is an exciting opportunity to work with talented students across Years 7-13, fostering a love for running while helping them achieve their athletic goals in cross country and road race events.

About the Dio Distance Squad:

•Training Sessions: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:50am - 8:00 am.

•Location: Meets at the entrance of the Sports Centre Building near the function room.

•Focus: Social yet competitive running sessions, including speed work, hill reps, track efforts, and longer continuous runs.

•Distances: 5-8 km per session at a pace of approximately 5:30-6:00 minutes per km.

Competitions:

•Cross country season: January to mid-June, culminating in the NZ Secondary Schools Championships.

•Road race season: Summer, leading to the NZ Secondary Schools Track and Field/Road Race Championships in early December.

Key Responsibilities

•Plan and lead engaging training sessions tailored to the squad's needs and competition schedules.

•Provide coaching and mentoring to develop the technical skills, endurance, and confidence of runners at all levels.

•Ensure safety and maintain appropriate student-to-coach ratios during all sessions.

•Foster a positive and inclusive team environment.

•Assist with event preparation, including guidance on race strategies and participation logistics.

•Communicate effectively with the Sports Office, parents, and runners.

Qualifications & Skills:

•Proven experience in coaching or competing in distance running (preferably at a high school or competitive level).

•Strong knowledge of training techniques, injury prevention, and race preparation.

•Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills to inspire and motivate young athletes.

•Commitment to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment.

•Ability to work collaboratively with parents and school staff.

Additional Details:

● Duration: Year-round, aligned with the running seasons.

● Events: Coaches may be required to support students during key competitions, including school athletics and cross-country events, regional and national championships, and the prestigious NZSS Road Race Relay Festival.
